I'm continually amazed that no one had questions during the orientation about the way the class operates, but then they have plenty of questions or fail to understand the second week. It's prompting me to create a new handout.

Most of you clearly understand how things work, but here are some reminder notes from the orientation to help jog the memories of those who are still struggling.

  1. The first homework assignment --send me an e-mail introducing yourself-- was due last Saturday (a day or two after the orientation).

  2. Also due by Saturday were the first two lecture assignments. Read the lecture, answer the question, and e-mail the answer to me. A separate e-mail for each lecture.

  3. This is NOT A SELF-PACED class. You need to follow the schedule. A preliminary timeline is posted on the web site, but a more up-to-date weekly e-mail assignment will be sent out each Sunday/Monday. If it differs from the online timeline, follow the weekly mail.

Assignments due Wednesday may be completed any time Monday through Wednesday. Those due Saturday may be done any time Thursday through Saturday.

  4. Each lecture/assignment should be a separate e-mail. NO ATTACHMENTS unless I indicate otherwise. I prefer that you put everything into a message window. I'm not interested in bold and other formatting. Plain text with lots of spacing and occasional all caps goes a long way.

REMEMBER to follow the correct protocol for naming your e-mails. In the subject line put J100x -- YourLastName - key word. Of course "key word" would be replaced with the suggested title of the lecture/homework assignment. Use "question" if there is something I need to see/react to right away.

  5. The concepts assignment handed out the first night is NOT DUE until the end of the section. You should not be working ahead, so that means that you cannot possibly complete it the first week of class.

  6. Late lectures are not accepted for credit. But you need the information in them, so you might as well do them late if necessary. I'll record that you did them, even if you don't get credit. I'll mark down late homework quite a bit; turn it in on time! Too late and I won't take it at all.

  7. In addition to working on the lectures and homework assignments, you need to be reading the text --did I mention you will need the text to pass the tests? The chapters for Section One of the class are 1, 9 and 16. You'll need to read the text not only for the tests, but to answer some of the
    concepts questions.

  8. For Sections 2-5 you will also need to see some movies outside of class. I'll remind you at the beginning of each section what the movies are, or you can look ahead on the online timeline. They will need to be viewed any time during the section (before you take the test).
